Divides

We read $a \mid b$ as "$a$ divides $b$", which means that $b$ is a multiple of $a$ or that $a$ is a factor of $b$. Note that this is a statement that is either true or false, not an operation.

The Natural Numbers

For Natural numbers $a, b$ we defined $a \mid b$ to mean that there exists some $n \in \mathbb{N}$ so that $an = b$.

The Integers

For integers $a, b$ we defined $a \mid b$ to mean that there exists some $n \in \mathbb{Z}$ so that $an = b$.
